五右衛門風呂計画は移住当初から、最初の課題は何処から風呂釜を手に入れるかであった。

The Goemon Bath Project was in my mind since the beginning. The problem was where to get a bathtub.

母に話すと祖母の家の裏にあったようなと、そういえば大きな甕があったような…

後日確認すると底は土に埋まり中には落ち葉と水が溜まってはいるが風呂釜があった！写真はサビサビに見えるけど内側の表面の錆は削り落としてある。

When I told to my mom about it. She said there maybe one in the back of the grandma’s house…

So I checked there and yes there was one half buried and covered with rust. The photo above looks rusty(it actually is) but this was after cleaning.

調べてみると一般的に五右衛門風呂と呼ばれるものは江戸時代に開発された底だけが鉄製で上部は木製の桶になっているもののこと、風呂釜自体が鋳物のものは明治になってから広島の鋳造職人が作ったもので長州風呂と呼ばれていたらしい。広島は因州だが隣の長州の名を使ったのは幕末から明治維新で幕府側にいた因州を京都大阪の人々が嫌っただからとか。

排水のパイプは錆びて朽ちていたので交換が必要、ただ外すのに手間取り本体側の雌穴も欠けてしまった。排水パイプは既存の内径32mmのものと寸法が同じだったが欠けてたので父に溶接を依頼した。しかし鋳物の溶接は専門の技術がいるらしく耐熱パテで接合してもらう事に。

The drainage pipe was too rusty and half broken so I took it out. And I broke the bathtub hole as well… I got the same sized pipe from DIY shop and asked my dad to weld it to the broken hole. But welding casting iron need a special skill. Still my dad used heat resistant patty to repair.

そして釜はドラム缶を高さ50cmで切ったものを採用、風呂を乗せると底部が10cm中に収まるから焚くときは内部に40cmの高さが出来る。ちょっと高すぎると思ったが、後々底に灰がたまれば丁度良いのかな～、灰はある程度の厚みで残せば湯温を長く保持できると思うしね。

手前の開口部が焚き口、奥にはL字の煙突部材をリベットで接合したが、リベットが高温に耐えられるかが不安である。左側には排水の穴も開けてある。

The boiler is an old drum. It’s 50cm high and the tab comes in 10cm. So boiler hight is 40cm and I thought it’d be too much. But then I though it again it’d be filled with much ashes later. Also ash becomes isolation too.It will keep the water warm right?

載せてみた。これだと不安定だから前もってフレームを組んであるが、このままでも意外に安定している。風呂自体に重量があるのでドラム缶の切断面と密着して中々の安定感。

確か自分が小さい時は母の実家でこのお風呂に入った記憶がある。今回使った煙突はここにあった風呂の薪ボイラーから引き継いだ。まだ出て来てないけどフレームは広島の親戚からいただいたウッドデッキ部材と母屋の内装廃材。時も場所も超えて復活した五右衛門風呂は気持ち良いんだろうな～、完成は次回！

It’s on~ looks unstable but it isn’t! I already made a flame for this. But the bathtub fit perfectly on the boiler and steady. In fact it was hard to separate.

Come to think of the past I think I took the same bath when I was little. This bathtub was out there for thirty years eh. The chimney was from the bath boiler here. And the flame(hasn’t show in this blog yet) was from my relatives from Hiroshima and the interior of the house. All of them where sleeping different places and meet up here back to life. Isn’t that great?
