In Portland, Oregon, Mark Lakeman’s communitecture-involved REBUILDING CENTER. Rescues, repairs, and sells, 1,900 tons of discarded resources at low prices annually. They also hold 200 DIY classes every year. It would be great if there were places like this all over the world… Our guide was Kai Sawyer, an activist and organizer of Tokyo Urban Permaculture (TUP).

It’s hard to imagine what kind of amount of resources they are rescuing, repairing, and selling at a low price, which is 1,900 tons of waste per year.
Garbage is the end of the world once it is thrown away.
I honestly don’t think I’ve ever thought about what happens to it afterwards.
The large warehouse-like area was crammed full of rescued objects.
I was so busy chasing after Terra that I couldn’t take my time to look around, but there was a wide variety of things on display, from home appliances to furniture to things like “What’s this? I remember it was just before dusk on a weekday, but there were a lot of people rummaging around in the store.
There were so many things here alone, but if you look at this on a global level…
An unbelievable amount of usable things are being discarded as garbage every day. It’s a reality I don’t want to see, and it hurts my heart…
I think it would be great if we could live in a world where we all keep in mind that resources are limited and continue to use things that are still usable with care.
Instead of building new houses and stores, there should be construction companies that specialize in building with these reused products! It’s good for your wallet and good for the planet! That’s how I feel.
It would be great if such a center could spread all over the country and take root in people’s daily lives as one of their options.
I heard that there is also a ReBuilding Center in Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture in Japan, so if you are in the area, please visit! I think it’s important to support this kind of activity together in order to create a sustainable lifestyle.
And I hope that these centers will spread all over Japan!
